Is Your Ex Still Trying To Be Friends? He Might Be A Psychopath
Ex Boyfriend Recovery

It’s time to heed some advice from Beyonce herself: If you’ve got an ex who just won’t give up on trying to stay friends with you, get those middle fingers up, put your hands high, wave it in his face, and tell him, “Boy, BYE.” Because he might be a narcissist or a psychopath.

In the past, studies have shown that people who have strong “dark personality traits” — including narcissism, dishonesty, and even psychopathy — are more likely to pick friends for strategic reasons, value money and power, prefer short-term relationships, and have manipulative tendencies. Researchers at Oakland University wanted to see if this theory specifically applied to people who choose to stay friends with their exes, too.

For their study, they had almost 900 people list their reasons for being friends with their exes, and then rate those reasons by importance; the subjects were also surveyed for traces of dark personality traits. The results, released this April, showed that most participants were motivated to stay friends with their exes because they felt their previous romantic relationship was “reliable, trustworthy, and of sentimental value.”

But the study also revealed that the people were more likely to stay friends with their exes if they had those dark personality traits, and their most important reasons for staying friends was because they believed their former flames might still useful to them in some way — or if thought they had a chance to hook up with them again.

"Narcissists hate to fail or lose, so (they) will do what they can to maintain some connection if they didn't make the choice to end it," said Dr. Tony Ferretti, a psychologist who’s an expert on narcissism, in an interview with Broadly. "They can experience narcissistic injury when rejected by a partner and have difficulties letting it go or healing from it."

Ferretti added that people with dark personality traits also might want to stay friends with their exes because they have “inside information about their exes vulnerabilities and weaknesses that they can exploit and manipulate which gives them a sense of power and control," he said. How nice. So when it’s 2 a.m. on a Thursday night and yet another “You awake?” from your ex pops up on your phone — clingy, much? — you’ve got a pretty good reason to just delete his number and go back to sleep.
